Hackers provided this diagram of the banner launch mechanism to the MIT Museum. This diagram is actually for a previous version of the mechanism which relied on timer control and a local battery.
In practice, the hackers decided that they could not rely on the timer and internal battery. Consequently, the timer and battery were removed, and the ignition wires were run under the field to the stadium. Batteries were carried in with the hackers on the day of the game and attached to the ignition wires at launch time.
The deployed version was buried in the ground, not placed in the goalposts as the diagram indicates.
