Prior to the 5ESS telephone system that was installed in 1987, MIT's dormitories were linked with the "dormline" telephone system, which used 1940's step-by-step technology. Since operators from outside MIT couldn't tell what number the calls were going to, they had to be informed not to allow collect calls or third number billing to the dormline phones. MIT accomplished this by having a recording that played every time someone called into the dormline system from off campus which said "This is MIT. Collect and third number calls will not be accepted at this number."
