On April 20, 1993, after 6-years as a Dean for Student Affairs at MIT, James R. Tewhey, tendered his resignation to Provost Mark Wrighton under a haze of harassment charges. The situation was quite ironic as Dean Tewhey was one of the primary resources in the MIT administration for handling harassment cases filed by students.
A few weeks later, a tombstone, marking his departure and commemorating his stint at MIT, mysteriously appeared in the middle of Kresge Oval, in front of the Student Center where Tewhey's office was located.
