Edwin Phortey

Location: E40
Date: 10/4/91

At MIT all the buildings are numbered, and the number is the primary designation used by the MIT community. When a new building was constructed on the East side of campus, it was known primarily by its number, E40, like other buildings on campus. When it came time for the building's official dedication in 1991, the dedication plaque was hacked so that the ``name'' of the building reflected the number which it was regularly called.

Hackers designated the building the ``Edwin Phortey'' buliding so that its number and abbreviated name, ``E. Phortey'' were the same.
